Lighting Gigs Are Slowly Killing Me

I used to be a full-time lighting designer/operator. I used to have one or more 'lighting residencies' at nightclubs. I still co-own a small, full-service lighting company we call Lighting Beyond 1magination (or LB1 for short).

Though I no longer gig full-time like I used to, I occasionally participate in some large scale events. Recently I did an Electronic music festival called Electric Daisy Carnival, Colorado. EDC, as it’s referred, is Colorado’s cousin to the infamous EDC which occurs annually in Los Angeles. The show in Colorado isn't nearly as big as the multi-million attended version in LA, but it is still a grand production in itself. After all was said and done, I was awake for 65 hours that weekend. It was no walk in the park, either. I ended up helping with the lighting crew that was touring with The Crystal Method. They brought what was in my opinion, the best lighting rig of all the 7 stages at the event. Needless to say, after all those hours of work and no sleep, and rigging/de-rigging all that gear, I was essentially a zombie.

This weekend I'm working for an old client and former employer of mine. It’s a nightclub and event center that goes by the names of Tracks Denver and the Exdo Event Center. Tracks Denver is Denver’s biggest, and longest running gay-centric night club. This weekend happens to be the "Gay Pride" festival. I'll tell you what, the gays surely do know how to party. You might think they invented it. The people I'm working with this weekend, whom I've worked with countless times in the past, are putting on a seriously impressive series of shows this weekend — almost non-stop entertainment from Thursday through Sunday. I'm only on my second day (of five), and already I can feel the exhaustion setting in. I'm working with my business partner, Sven, whom I consider to be the most amazing, talented, and versatile lighting designer in the world. I'm absolutely astounded at how Sven, who does lighting full-time, handles so much on his plate at once. The man (if not super-human) is always doing at least 10 things at once, and I'm sure there’s always at least 100 things on his mind at any given moment.

I aspire to have his focus and drive.
